Mawi leaves his home village of Maitengwe for the City of Gaborone in search of a job. He is employed as a labourer in a construction company,an assignment that he goes on to despise for its low pay.He shares a room with Lobani in a shanty township where living conditions are deplorable. He goes on to admire the lifestyle of another friend Wabo, who appears to be progressive and a pickpocket.
