About the book:

The world has many great hotels. Throughout the Pacific Basin are famous and historical establishments such as the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, the Raffles in Singapore, the Manila Hotel in Manila and the Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu. It was built in a time of great opulence and craftsmanship. Built only a few years before the Great Depression, the Royal survived that turmoil. It also survived the years of the Second World War, when it was turned over to the Navy. During those halcyon days of the 1930's, the Royal earned a solid reputation for quality and service that has lasted to this day. Hawaii was the place to go and the Royal was the place to stay and be seen. Everyone--from famous film stars and noted statesmen to ordinary citizens who could afford a trip on a Matson steamer and a stay at the hotel--was off to Hawaii. This book traces the Royal's colorful history from its opening in 1927 to the present. Many photos are published here for the first time. Despite the hotel's relatively brief existence, its background is fascinating.
