About the book:

Softcover with wraps, 432 pages, measures 11.7 inches tall by 8.7 inches wide by 1.5 inches thick. Weighs 4 pounds. Published by The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (January 1, 1997). Catalog of an exhibition organized by and held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Feb. 23-May 11, 1997; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, June 19-Sept. 7, 1997; and the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Oct. 9, 1997-Jan. 4, 1998. This exhibit followed up the acclaimed 1991 show and catalog Degenerate Art: The Fate of the Avant-Garde in Nazi Germany (LJ 8/91) with this equally important and powerfully rendered show and catalog. Covered are the careers, lives, and works of 23 well-known German and Austrian artists, architects, and photographers who lived in exile between 1933 and 1945 including: Schwitters, Josef Albers, Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Walter Gropius, George Grosz, John Heartfield, Wassily Kandinsky, Andre Kertesz, Oskar Kokoschka, Fernand Leger, Jacques Lipchitz, Andre Masson, and Luwig Mies van der Rohe For all the artists, their years of exile would become crucial to the development of their art. This book has more than 300 illustrations (mostly black and white, some color), historic photographs, and documents and essays by 19 prominent American and European art historians discussing all aspects of the artist in exile, from monographic studies of individual figures to an analysis of the French artistic community in New York. Organized thematically, the text covers such topics as the exiled artists' initial flights to European artistic centers outside of Germany, their escape from Europe, the cultural climate they faced in the United States, and their influence as teachers. Contains a detailed chronology and bibliography.
