About the book:

'I fail to see', wrote respectable suburban bank clerk Charles Pooter, '- because I do not happen to be a "Somebody" - why my diary should not be interesting.' The journal of a suburban bank clerk seems an unlikely subject, but Mr Pooter's diary is a comic masterpiece. The honest but obtuse Pooter, platitude personified, goes about his daily business - hanging up a plaster stag's head in his Holloway hall 'to give it style', quarrelling with his neighbours, and swapping excruciating puns with his dear wife, Carrie. Pooter reveals a talent for causing himself injury and, entirely contrary to his intentions, for leaving his readers in a state of high amusement.
