About the book:

Neil Welliver's large paintings of the Maine woods have been aptly described as numbering among "the strongest images in modern American Art. The purpose of this book is to show this artist's unique talent for both his life and his art. As a painter Neil Welliver conciliates equally well the influences he has received and independence of his choices. A student of Albers, he was trained in the years of Abstract Expressionism and has often voiced his admiration for the work of Jackson Pollock. He himself however is a figurative painter, who says "I paint nature, but I am not interested in painting from nature" at all. A sensitive water-colorist, he shoes unfailing maestria in handling eight by ten canvases, which he deliberately begins at the top left corner, "painting wet into wet" thus mastering the thoughtless of nature and at the same time defying all the conventions of traditional painting.
