About the book:

T. B. Harbottle's "Dictionary of Battles" has long been a standard reference work. Since its first publication in 1904, the dictionary has provided student and scholar alike with concise and accurate information on literally thousands of engagements. This new edition has been revised and brought up to date by George Bruce, whose efforts have expanded the dictionary without detracting from Harbottle's original far-ranging scholarship. Bruce notes in his Preface: "Alterations and changes in the text I confined to matters of fact. I standardized the sequence of fact in each battle reference, but I did not change either Mr. Harbottle's spelling of place names, or his style. Thus, in battles before the twentieth century, occasionally the enemy was 'slain,' 'utterly routed,' 'signally defeated,' or 'driven from the field in confusion.' Battle is usually defined today as combat between large or relatively large armed forces on land or sea or in the air, and it is in this sense that this work is a dictionary of battles, not of political events associated with them, though reference is necessarily made to these."
