About the book:

This is the second, and last, volume of essays on the history of education to be sponsored by the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies. It is the product of papers produced by fellows and visitors to the center in the last two years of its concentration on the history of education. As with the first volume, the central concept behind all the articles here is to study the interaction between the formal institutions of education and the society within which they were set and on behalf of which they were supposed to function. The problems studied by the authors of these essays range widely over time and space. But they are all asking similar questions, about the relationship of ideas and religion on the one hand and economic and social realities on the other to the formation of educational institutions and curriculum.
