About the book:

Have humans so badly damaged the earth that global warming and massive extinction are inevitable, catastrophe unavoidable? Is our kind doomed? Is there room for hope? Entrepreneur and environmentalist Maurice Strong doesn't offer firm answers to any of these questions save the last, counselling that there may yet be time to undo some of the mess we have made--but also offering some scary scenarios for what might happen if we do not. Strong is a self-admittedly contradictory figure, a wealthy businessman who has headed huge nuclear power and hydroelectric concerns while taking important roles at international environmental conferences and there pressing for a greener way of life. (So effective has he been, in fact, that the conspiracy set has pegged him as "a leading socialist [and] New World Order manipulator.") In this book, Strong describes his education in matters ecological and political, charting such things as the hidden costs of global inequalities while the gap between rich and poor nations widens and the more obvious costs of maintaining an economy that depends on fossil fuels. Although his outlook on the future contains much room for despair, he argues that it is possible "to improve the lives and prospects of people in environmental and social as well as economic terms." He closes his book with an intelligent, and realistic, program of action for avoiding doomsday, among the planks of which are the development of an environmentally sensitive market system that accounts for ecological costs and makes full use of alternative energy sources. Readers may not agree with all of the particulars, but Strong's book is a calm and thoughtful examination of issues of the utmost importance. --Gregory McNamee
