Born in Lovington (Illinois ) in 1936.1 PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin in 1960. Between 1971 and 1995 he taught at the University of New Orleans -of which became emeritus professor, he was founder and director the National D - Day Museum , instituted in memory of the Normandy landings . Considered one of the leading specialists in the Second World War, Ambrose is the author of an extensive essays . As a military technical advisor , participated in the script of several films as production of Steven Spielberg 's Saving Private Ryan or television adaptation of his book Band of Brothers. Awarded , among others, George Marshall awards , Abraham Lincoln and The Medal for Distinguished Public Service, the highest award given to a civilian by the United States Department of Defense . He died due to lung cancer .
