About the book:

This study centres on the "economic underworld" - the world of economic disssidents - and its treatment at the hands of orthodox economists. At its core is a set of intellectual biographies of nine economic heretics, ranging from the 18th century (Sir James Steuart) to the late 20th century (E.F.Schumacher) and including socialists (John Francis Bray, J.A.Hobson and Paul Baran), conservatives (E.S.Cayley and F.W.S.Andrews) and writers of no easily categorizable political persuasion (Henry George and C.H.Douglas). Their wide range of dissenting views are viewed as varieties of "deviant science" and their place in the history of economic thought is interpreted in this light.
