Excerpt: ... the free spirit of prophecy did not agree. In the turmoil of the Greek period, Phariseeism replaced Judaism, and a further descent was marked. It was surely a decline from Isaiah's message of a Holy Nation to the Holy Church of Ezra. Later, for Holy Church the Pharisees substituted Holy Ego. In such extreme legalism the spirit of prophecy was smothered. Yet God makes the bigotry, as well as the wrath, of man to praise Him. We must not forget that the impenetrable shell of Phariseeism preserved the soul of the nation from the disintegrating influence of Hellenism, until One should come who was both prophet and priest, and who elevated the spirit forever above the letter when he declared that "neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem shall ye worship the Father. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth." VII The New Testament The reconstruction of the New Testament has not been so thoroughly accomplished as the remoulding of the Old. The traditional view that the four gospels were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is now pretty generally abandoned. If the first generation of Christians left any written records of our Lord's life, none has come down to us in its original form. Mark is considered to be the oldest of the gospels. The author of this book, probably John Mark, wrote down the evangelical story as he had received it from eye witnesses, from common report, and from such written accounts as were extant, thus putting in permanent form a general scheme of the ministry of Jesus.
