About the book:

For those who think God beyond or the Devil beneath their consideration, this volume provides a useful corrective. The Key to Heaven, 'Edifying Tales to serve as Teaching and Warning', offers for perusal seventeen Biblical narratives skillfully retold for application to our time; the stories selected include those of the Creation, Noah, Job, Ruth, Solomon, and Salome. Morals are supplies in every case. The authoritative but pragmatic approach of God found in this first part contrasts with the brilliance and smoothness of reasoning apparent in Talk of the Devil. See, for instance, 'A Shorthand Transcript of a Metaphysical Press Conferences given by the Demon in Warsaw, on 20 December 1963', but look too at the words of well-known figures such as Orpheus, Heloise, and Luther who have encountered him. The monologues contained in this section have been defined by Dr. Kolakowski as 'collection of parables against theodicy, a doctrine which tries to vindicate divine attributes, such as justice and holiness, in respect to the existence of evil'. But these arid phrases are probably best passed over for more fluent ones of the speakers themselves. Readers of fiction and nonfiction, and students of religion, philosophy, and even politics, will find much to charm and captivate them, and much too upon which to muse and reflect.
