About the book:

The reign of Francois (Francis) I (12 September 1494 - 31 March 1547) is the most radiant and creative in the history of French monarchs. Two brilliant cultures came together: that of Gothic France and that of Renaissance Italy. He did not merely preside, but took a direct influence upon the civilization of France. This book is the first English-language study of Francois I in decades. As a supreme patron of the arts, he had as court painters Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea del Sarto. He bought works from Raphael and Michelangelo and Benvenuto Cellini was his jeweller. His library became the Bibliotheque Nationale and he founded the College de France. He built a great chateux of the Loire Valley. Forty color pages and hundreds of black and white photos help convey the splendor of his works.
