About the book:

Identity statements recently have come to be of significant interest to many philosophers, and rightly so, for they are an important form of statement in any natural language. This study attempts to put some of the basic issues they raise in a fresh perspective and to provide some of the fundamental elements of an overall view of identity statements. Its results are relevant to a number of central problems in the philosophy of language, philosophical logic, metaphysics, philosophy of science, and philosophical theology. Free of unnecessary jargon and formalisation, it is written in such a way as to introduce the non-specialist to contemporary discussions of its subject matter. Part 1 deals with the question: What does an identity statement state? Part 2 deals with Leibniz'z Law and of metaphysically important sorts of identity statements which appear to stand in violation of this principle widely thought to govern identity.
