The stirring continuation of the themes begun in "Henry IV, Part One" again pits a rebellion within the State and that master of misrule, Falstaff, against the maturing of Prince Hal. Alternating scenes between bawdy tavern and regal court, between revelry and politics, Shakespeare probes at the sources, uses, and responsibilities of power as an old king dies and a young king must choose between a ruler's solemn duty and a merry but dissipated friend, Falstaff. The play represents Shakespeare at the peak of his maturity in writing historical drama and comedy. [via]

In its concentration of interest upon the protagonists, Macbeth can be seen as Shakespeare's experiment in unity of focus, whose chief appeal arises from the struggles of the central characters with each other and with the infernal powers that inspire or govern them. Over the centuries, the vision of directors like Welles, Nunn and Polanski, as well as the eloquent talents of actors like Garrick, Siddons, Olivier and McKellen have contributed to the central debate of the play: Who or what is culpable? Bernice W. Kliman, in her analysis of Macbeth in performance, examines major productions of the play on both stage and screen, thereby inviting the reader to contemplate directors' and actors' choices for what is arguably Shakespeare's most compelling play. The best-known and most enduring of William Shakespeares poems, his 154 sonnets, were circulated in handwritten copies, "among his private friends," in the mid-to-late 1590s. Shakespeare wrote nearly all of these excruciatingly personal lyrics, in their tightly prescribed form, during the first decade of his theatrical career, and during a brief literary vogue for such fourteen-liners. The first attempt to collect Shakespeares lyric verse came only in 1640, when an edition in small octavo format (a "pocket" style in keeping with other mid-century poetical volumes) was published by John Benson, a bookseller specializing in broadside ballads, popular literature, and music. It contains all but eight of the sonnets, a few songs from the plays and from The Passionate Pilgrim, "A Lovers Complaint," and "The Phoenix and the Turtle," as well as elegies on Shakespeare by the young John Milton and others.
Why Benson omitted eight sonnets remains a mystery. Benson does, however, include many poems not by Shakespeare at all, but by his contemporaries Christopher Marlowe ("Come live with me and be my love"), Ben Jonson, Thomas Heywood, John Fletcher, and Sir Walter Raleigh, and by several latter-day authors of light, witty, amorous verse (known collectively as the "Cavalier" poets).
The 1640 Poems has influenced readers and editors for nearly two hundred years, simply by collecting in one hand-friendly volume most of Shakespeares best-loved lyric poetry. This superb digital edition of the original work enables todays reader to share their experience.

One of the most controversial and problematic of all of Shakespeare's plays, The Taming of the Shrew is a typical Elizabethan domestic comedy written around 1592. Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, arrives in Padua and announces to his friends that "I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; / If wealthily, then happily in Padua". He soon finds that a group of men keen to marry Bianca, the younger daughter of rich old Baptista, are frustrated by her elder, "shrewish" sister, Katherine. There is much subsequent hilarity as Bianca's suitors make a bet with Petruchio that he cannot "tame" and marry Katherine. Despite Katherine's protestations, Petruchio goes ahead with the match, using deliberately unorthodox behaviour to confuse Katherine (including a scene where he starves her), claiming that "this is the way to kill a wife with kindness". The play culminates with a scene of Katherine's apparently spontaneous subjection to her husband's will, where she places her hand beneath her husband's foot, and tells the other wives present that "thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper". The play's gratuitous scenes of women being abused and vilified in the name of "comedy" has made many directors and critics very uncomfortable with the play, and many feminist critics have condemned contemporary productions of the play as reproducing certain 16th-century stereotypes concerning women who speak out against male authority. --Jerry Brotton [via]
