The poet Wendy Cope has chosen the stories in this wonderful anthology. It includes all types, from the humorous (about an oblong pancake or a dog who could talk) to the moving (a story about an elephant and how he was unhappy with his lot in life); from those collected for their entertainment value, to those for their literary merit; from traditional folk tales from Africa and Japan, and fairy tales, to popular contemporary favourites; to the retelling of old favourites such as "Emperor's New Clothes" and "Beauty and the Beast".
It follows therefore that the authors are many and various, from the traditional to the well-known and popular, modern contemporary writers such as one-time poet laureate Ted Hughes, Joan Aitken, Anthony Mingella, and Penelope Lively. Superb illustrations, all in full colour have been specially commissioned from some of the best-known children's illustrators of modern times, including Quentin Blake, Inga Moore, Jane Ray and others. Chosen specifically for use as bedtime stories, this collection of stories will really be a boon at bedtime as a rough estimate is given as the amount of time each story will take to be read aloud, and it will be a real delight to read for adults and children alike. "All of them are tales that children and their parents will enjoy together". Wendy Cope is well qualified to make the selection, having worked as a Primary School teacher, she became a writer in her spare time and achieved phenomenal success and critical acclaim, and immediate entry into bestseller lists, as she wrote and edited anthologies for children and adults, receiving several awards along the way. This classic anthology is an essential addition to every child's bookshelf and will be treasured by families for many years to come. (Suitable for ages 4+) --Susan Naylor
