This book has been written to provide the background information and stylistic comment necessary for a full appreciation of the poem.
A lengthy introduction describes the cultural setting as well as the style and poetry of the Iliad. Professor Hogan then analyzes each book, beginning with a brief plot summary and discussion of the book's notable features. A page-by-page commentary follows in which he explains the specific historical, cultural, and mythical references and points to the stylistic and compositional aspects of the poem. Throughout, emphasis is on what is peculiar to the Greek oral epic: the typical scenes, the functions of Homer's divinities, the values of the society and heroes, and the dramatic and narrative techniques used by the poet.
This volume is based on the translation by Robert Fitzgerald, who in a lucid Foreword shares his ideas and the rationale for his approach to the Iliad.
