Five Architects, originally published in 1975, grew out of a meeting of the CASE group (Conference of Architects for the Study of the Environment) held at the Museum of Modern Art in 1969. The purpose of this gathering was to exhibit and criticize the work of five architects--Eisenman, Graves, Gwathmey, Hejduk, and Meier--who constituted a New York school, and who are now among the most influential architects working today.
The buildings shown here have more diversity than one might expect from a school, but share certain properties of form, scale, and treatment of material. Collectively, their work makes a modest claim: it is only architecture, not the salvation of man and the redemption of the earth. No matter how varied their individual theories and visions, all five architects simply share a passion for the art of architecture.
Providing complete drawings and photographic documentation, this collection also includes a comparative critique by Kenneth Frampton, an Introduction by Colin Rowe that suggests a still broader context for the work as a whole, and two short texts in which individual positions are outlined. Now back in print, Five Architects serves as a reference to the early work of some of America's most important architects and provides us with a glimpse back at the direction of architecture as they saw it twenty years ago. The Getty Center, on a 110 acre hilltop in west Los Angeles, is the new home for the Museum, the five Institutes, and the Grant Program that make up the J. Paul Getty Trust. This study documents the planning and construction of the Center, designed by Richard Meier and Partners. Included are a series of essays that underscore the challenges faced by architect, contractor and owner as they worked collaboratively throughout the course of the project, and a chronology which identifies the key dates and events in the design and construction process. Illustrated with images by accomplished photographers, site drawings from Richard Meier and Partners and Robert Irwin's drawings of the Central Gardens, which he designed, the book presents an insider's view of the story behind the making of the Getty Center. Essays are included by Richard Meier, Stephen D. Rountree and Ada Louise Huxtable. [via]

While architectural styles keep changing, Richard Meier is a rock of constancy, holding fast to the forms and principles of classic 20th-century modernism. His pristine white buildings, precise and articulated, proclaim that rationality and clarity still have the power to impress us in an age of unfettered stylistic experimentation. Others may seize the role of Dionysus, but he is content to be Apollo.
This is the third installment of a series of monographs on Meier's architecture; the first volume was published in 1985. It records 23 works designed or completed between 1992 and 1999. The best known of these is the legendary Getty Center in Los Angeles, but that billion-dollar Wagnerian extravaganza has not distracted Meier from turning out many other impressive structures of large and small scale, including the Hague City Hall and Central Library, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Rachovsky House in Dallas. Two-thirds of the projects are in Europe or Asia, suggesting that America may not be taking full advantage of this native son's abilities.
This large-format, square book is handsomely assembled, with 444 pages and more than 650 well-reproduced color and black-and-white photos and finely honed line drawings. Essays by architectural historians Kenneth Frampton and Joseph Rykwert and a postscript by architect Arata Isozaki--all major figures in their fields--provide valuable analysis that completes this impressive volume. --John Pastier [via]
