From the turn of the century until his death in 1959, Frank Lloyd Wright produced a virtually uninterrupted stream of projects that defined and redefined the American architectural vision. The most comprehensive summary and appraisal of Wright's achievement ever assembled, with nearly 500 illustrations, including 190 in color, this volume presents an impressive array of works: single family houses that provided images and models for generations of suburban buildings across the United States, community solutions to housing for Depression America, and an astonishing progression of landmark commercial and institutional structures. In these pages appear Wright's most spectacular commissions--among them Fallingwater, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Tokyo's Imperial Hotel--but also a retrospective selection of other projects from all periods of his enormously productive career. Photographs of actual buildings and of models, plans, and sketches, as well as reproductions of the architect's masterful drawings, many previously unpublished, are all included.

Groundswell: Constructing the Contemporary Landscape presents 23 projects that reveal the surge of creativity and discussion surrounding the designed landscape in a broad, principally urban, international context. In the last 20 years, many significant new public spaces have been created for sites that have been reclaimed from conflict, environmental degradation, and abandonment. The projects, found throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, were selected for their outstanding design, and for their variety of contexts, materials, scale, and types of spaces. This fully illustrated volume includes an essay by Peter Reed, Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, that demonstrates how these innovative projects expand the definition of the modernist landscape while responding to a variety of conditions such as program, social function, and the transformation and reclamation previously industrial areas. The essay is followed by a full-color plate section featuring the selected projects. Catalogue entries for each project provide a succinct description of the site, its transformation, and design concepts illustrated by photographs, drawings, and models.

› Find signed collectible books: 'A Modern Garden: The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden at The Museum of Modern Art'
In the Fall of 2004, The Museum of Modern Art completed a major expansion and renovation of its famous midtown Manhattan building, doubling the Museum's size and introducing dynamic new galleries and public spaces. At the core of the remodeled Museum, designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi, is the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, newly restored to its 1953 dimensions. Described by Taniguchi as "perhaps the most distinctive single element of the Museum today," the Sculpture Garden, an oasis of water, trees and masterpieces of modern sculpture, has long been the Museum's signature space--as well as its social heart. This fully illustrated, affordable, pocket-sized book is designed to convey the beauty and elegance of the garden. It also features a photographic chronology of the many performances, exhibitions and events held in the garden over the years, as well as an introduction and a brief historical narrative.

› Find signed collectible books: 'National Mathematics Project: Tchrs' Year 3, Red Track: Mathematics for Secondary Schools'
This is the teachers' handbook which accompanies the third year Blue Track pupils' book. It is part of a five year NMP scheme in mathematics for secondary schools and is intended to lead the student towards grades (C) D E F G in GCSE. The NMP series comprises a single textbook for all pupils in year one. In years two, three, four and five there are two tracks, Red and Blue, with a single pupil's text for each track. The Red Track leads towards the higher GCSE grades A B C (D) and the Blue Track towards the lower grades. The structure of the course aims to provide a system whereby appropriate material for the whole ability range is included in one book, and which at the same time makes allowance for pupils whose mathematical ability develops during the secondary school years. The books were written by teachers to satisfy the recommendations of the Cockcroft Report, the requirements of the GCSE National Criteria and examination syllabuses and have undergone trials in schools. They combine content and process, an important recommendation of Cockcroft and aim to promote guided active learning in order to develop pupils' skills, knowledge and understanding. This is done by the inclusion of varying sections, some of which encourage work with others, some have structured, more challenging tasks and yet others include activities, investigative work and project work. This accompanying teachers' handbook provides a concise overview of the content and aims of every chapter, reduced pages of pupils' text with page-by-page teaching notes, answers, teaching notes, details of simple equipment needed for each lesson and space for notes.

Showcasing selected works from The Museum of Modern Art's superlative architecture and design collection, Objects of Design features a wide variety of industrial and domestic artifacts by great designers of the modern period, from early masters such as Hector Guimard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Josef Hoffmann to contemporary practitioners including Droog Design, Ettore Sottsas, Gaetano Pesce, Hella Jongerius and others. Some of the objects represent turn-of-the-century designs of the Vienna Secession, Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement; others are Bauhaus and de Stijl explorations; still others show Charles and Ray Eames and other American designers of the second half of the 20th century; representations of the Italian design revolutions; and contemporary manifestations of familiar genres using radical new materials and techniques of manufacture. The book's 360 color plates not only reveal the range of aesthetic viewpoints in design since the late 19th century but together trace the historical development of the Museum's celebrated design collection. In the introductory essay, Paola Antonelli, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, explores the history of modern design as well as the story of the museum's collection and its influence on the history of modern and contemporary design itself.

At the height of their careers, tenor Peter Pears and composer Benjamin Britten traveled the globe, both to give performances and for pleasure. Pears, not a diarist in his daily life, had the habit of keeping journals while he was away--though even those were irregular. His diaries, most from the mid-1950s to the late '70s, are sometimes sketchy, even cryptic, but have been supplemented by Philip Reed's excellent editing and by letters and other material. The sections that were previously published (often in the Aldeburgh Festival's annual program book) have the virtue of a full narrative flow, and Pears reveals himself as an alert if unremarkable observer of food, art, flora, fauna, and people.
The couple's Asian tour in 1955-56 was deeply significant for Britten's subsequent output, especially his Church Parables. Pears describes their attendance at a performance (by a Japanese school group) of the Noh play Sumidagawa--the basis, eight years later, of Britten's first parable, Curlew River. The experience was thrilling to them both. Pears's comments are less worthwhile for their insight into the composer's thinking than for the sensation they give of being in the room at a moment of inspiration. The diaries are filled with celebrated friends and the aura that attended two famous musicians (traveling from Moscow to Armenia, a planeload of people bursts into applause when it is announced that Britten and Pears are among the passengers). The final segments were written when Pears made his Metropolitan Opera debut (at 64) in Death in Venice, and when he returned four years later, after Britten's death, to appear in Billy Budd.
This volume, essentially a footnote to studies on Britten and Pears, is one of the Aldeburgh Studies in Music series, which comprises a usefully broad range of titles examining Britten's techniques and influences. --David Olivenbaum

Since 1950, when his short stories first appeared, Kurt Vonnegut has published almost 50 short stories, 13 novels, two plays, and a teleplay. He has remained one of the shrewdest commentatorsand often harshest criticsof American society, challenging the complacency of the Eisenhower years, watching the Kennedy's with admiration, and disliking Nixon. He has remained one of the most important chroniclers of American life, his message often foreboding though rarely gloomy. Yet he occupies an ambiguous place in American letters. The 14 essays in this collection seek to chronicle Vonnegut's career as it moves through changing times.
The volume opens with a chronology of Vonnegut's life and three interviews with him. The essays consider his career, combining interest and readability for the general reader with critical commentary for the more serious scholar. The essays consider Vonnegut's later work or are retrospectives reevaluating aspects of his career. Some discuss individual works, particularly later novels, but most consider the ways Vonnegut pursues a theme or technique, the ways his mind works both in the construction of the novels and in the ideas embodied in them. There is also an Appendix discussing Vonnegut's most recent creative enterprise, graphic art, with 12 illustrations of his most recent art work.
