Often overlooked as outdoors destinations, the 10 states of the upper Mississippi/Missouri/Ohio River valleys encompass 103 national wildlife refuges, 64 of them in North Dakota alone. This guidebook profiles 43 of the region's refuges, which take in glacial lakes, sandhills, swift rivers, deep bays, and open prairies that shelter an astonishing diversity of plant and animal species, including gray wolves, falcons, rattlesnakes, and voles--as well as hundreds of bird species. Naturalist-writers John Grassy and Tom Powers offer remarks on the refuges' histories, the animals and plants they harbor, and the ongoing struggle to expand and maintain the national refuge system in a time when so much of the region is being developed (with, for example, prairie wetland being drained and filled at an unprecedented rate as once-quiet Midwestern cities and towns grow ever larger). Anyone who has been entranced by the Niobrara River or the call of a loon will want to follow the authors' suggestions on where to go and what to see. --Gregory McNamee [via]

The south-central United States--Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Oklahoma--harbors several dozen federally administered wildlife refuges, 41 of them open to the public and profiled in this guidebook. Some, such as Kansas's Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge, abound with diverse populations (in this case, more than 40,000 ducks and 200,000 geese that follow the Neosho River flyway) and are easily accessible to visitors. Others, such as Missouri's Big Muddy National Wildlife Refuge, are spearheads for the reintroduction and protection of threatened species, such as the beaver and the pallid sturgeon. Still others are fragmented remnants of once-widespread habitat types, among the last of their kind. All offer rewards to the visitor, and Bill Palmer's well-written book provides directions for how to get to the area's wildlife refuges and what to do and look for once you get there. --Gregory McNamee [via]

A favorite of birdwatchers (especially those who prefer photographs to illustrations), this field guide, revised for 2000, accounts for the 544 bird species that live in the region west of the Great Plains. The clearly printed color photographs capture birds at rest and in flight; preceded by black-and-white silhouettes, the plates are organized by visually based, intuitive categories--"hawk-like birds," "pigeon-like birds," and "perching birds," for example--that make on-the-fly identification a fairly simple matter. The images are matched by clearly written text that describes a given bird, gives an approximation of its voice, and details its habitat, range, nests, and behavior. Sized to fit in a jacket or backpack pocket, this is a valuable companion for any birding outing in the region. --Gregory McNamee [via]

This compact guidebook, produced to the National Audubon Society's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of more than 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with notes on several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies on first-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaborate keys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflower enthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed, tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, you would first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to red flowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn to the text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle. Well written and richly illustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for an expedition to eastern wood or prairie. --Gregory McNamee [via]

The Pacific Northwest is a cornucopia of extraordinary outdoor diversity. Pocket- and purse-friendly, this field guide covers habitats (subalpine meadows to rain forests to desert shrub to salt marshes) in addition to topography and geology (with explanations of the Oregon Dunes, Columbia Plateau Basalts, Mount St. Helens volcano, and a variety of minerals). Flora and fauna, however, make up the bulk of the book, with 1,000 of the most common species found in the Pacific Northwest. From mushrooms and algae to trees and wildflowers, fishes, frogs, flies, birds, and mammals, each species is identified with a color picture, short description, and notes on the habitat and season in which you'd encounter it. There's also an excellent chapter on Northwesterners' favorite topic of conversation--the weather--plus a guide to constellations and the night sky, for those evenings when it's clear. It behooves anyone who likes nature and lives in or visits the Pacific Northwest to carry the easy-to-use and beautifully put-together Audubon Society Field Guide at all times. --Stephanie Gold [via]
