This book is one of the most biblical books on the "lordship controversy" that erupted during the late '80s/early '90s. The book contains contributions from various authors from the Reformed and Lutheran traditions. Some of the more notable essays were written by Michael Horton, Rich Ritchie, and Kim Riddlebarger. The authors are critical of both the "free grace" position of Zane Hodges, Charles Ryrie, and Earl Radmacher and the "lordship" position of John MacArthur, Kenneth Gentry, and Ernest Reisinger. The authors feel that the "free grace" scholars put a radical disjunction between justification and sanctification, while the "lordship" scholars make no distinction between faith and doing works. Horton et al. find the perfect and biblical balance: those justified will produce works of righteousness (against Hodges/Ryrie/Radmacher), but having faith in Christ is not the same as obeying God's law (against MacArthur/Gentry/Reisinger). In this innovative work in theological method and hermeneutics, Michael S. Horton uses the motif of the covenant as a way of binding together God's "word" and God's "act." Seeking an integration of theological method with the content of Christian theology, Horton emphasizes God's covenant as God's way of working for redemption in the world. Horton maintains a substantial dialogue with important philosophical figures and Christian theologians, ultimately providing scholars and serious students a significant model for approaching and understanding Christian theology.

Ruled by sociology (the church growth movement), psychology (the self-esteem movement), and politics (both the Christian left and right), some respected Christian leaders consider the evangelical church today to have gone too far in adopting the world's tactics in the name of progress and betterment for the church. This book is a good warning to Christians who tend to hide from the world for fear of losing their faith. The author argues for the Christian's liberty to read fiction, to listen to good music, or to engage in scientific research without feeling guilty that his activities are "purely secular" and that God's time is too valuable to be "wasted" on such things. Prudent participation in culture is both a duty and a pleasure. It helps God's children to see Him as the Creator of everything that is beautiful and brilliant and to be able to say with J.S. Bach: SDG (Soli Deo Gloria)! The author does a wonderful job supporting his conclusions Biblically. A Dewey Decimal Number has been added for easy library filing. [via]
