Marcel Proust whiled away the first half of his life as a self-conscious aesthete and social climber. The second half he spent in the creation of the mighty roman-fleuve that is Remembrance of Things Past, memorializing his own dandyism and parvenu hijinks even as he revealed their essential hollowness. Proust begins, of course, at the beginning--with the earliest childhood perceptions and sorrows. Then, over several thousand pages, he retraces the course of his own adolescence and adulthood, democratically dividing his experiences among the narrator and a sprawling cast of characters. Who else has ever decanted life into such ornate, knowing, wrought-iron sentences? Who has subjected love to such merciless microscopy, discriminating between the tiniest variations of desire and self-delusion? Who else has produced a grief-stricken record of time's erosion that can also make you laugh for entire pages? The answer to all these questions is: nobody. [via]

A guide to "Combray", the opening section of Proust's "A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu". This text helps students to encounter in context the highlights of the book that have so often been anthologized: the madeleine dipped in the narrator's tear - the quintessential Proustian experience of affective memory - the scene of the goodnight kiss, the appearance of Swann, the evocation of the little town, the old servant, Francoise, and the charming landscapes. Suitable for both undergraduates and the general reader, an introduction clarifies the historical background to this masterpiece of French literature. It examines the ways in which the complexities of biography, literary transformation and the structural importance of its many themes may be approached and appreciated. The text is supported by full explanatory notes and frequent translations. [via]

In his last years, ill and aware that his early death was fast approaching, Marcel Proust seldom left the confines of his apartment. As the German bombs rained down on Paris, he worked desperately to complete his great novel, "In Search of Lost Time". Yet, although his illness and his dedication to his work meant that he rarely saw anyone but a few servants, Proust remained an indefatigable correspondent. He reached out to his wide circle of friends through his letters, and they vividly demonstrate that his great humanity, wit and compassion remained undimmed by his isolation and failing health. This, the fourth and final volume of the selected letters of Marcel Proust, brings to a close one of the greatest collections of correspondence in any language, at any time. [via]

Swann's Way begins with one of the most famous incidents in all of literature -- the taste of a madeleine and tea that reawakens the elusive childhood memories of the narrator, Marcel. An image of Charles Swann, a wealthy and fashionable neighbor, precipitates Marcel's recollection of Swann's marriage to Odette de Crecy, a beautiful, manipulative woman far beneath him in social standing, and of the jealousy, aroused by Odette's many affairs with both men and women, that eventually destroys Swarm. Marcel recounts, too, his own initiation into the aesthetic pleasures and sexual intrigues of belle-epoque Paris. The themes introduced in Swann's Way -- the destructive force of obsessive love, the allure and the consequences of transgressive sex, and the selective eye that shapes memories -- form the threads that unite all the volumes of Remembrance of Things Past.
