The second book in the Tyrants and Kings series, following The Jackal of Nar, continues to explore the fallout from the ruthless plans of now-dead King Arkus of the Iron Throne to unite the land in a vast, evil Black Renaissance. Prince Richius Vantran, the Jackal of Nar, was one of Arkus's star pupils, along with his one-time friend, the black-hearted Count Renato Biagio. After Arkus's death, Vantran broke with Biagio and his bloody plans, losing his wife, Sabrina, and barely escaping with his own life. Now he just lives quietly in hiding with his new wife and their beloved baby daughter. Unfortunately Biagio is determined to wreak his revenge on Vantran, even in the midst of civil war between the Black Renaissance and worshippers of the God of Light, led by Archbishop Herrith. Biagio schemes to bring down Herrith with a pair of secret weapons designed in his infamous war labs. In the meantime he sends his most trusted servant, Simon Darquis, to kidnap Vantran's daughter, unaware that the Jackal has been persuaded to lead an armada against Biagio's forces at the port of Crote. John Marco's novel stands out in the crowded field of epic fantasy due to its unique blend of magical and historical detail. He manages a reasonably satisfying conclusion here, while leaving plenty of loose ends for successive books sure to contain equally large helpings of bloody intrigue and gripping action. --Charlene Brusso [via]

The first volume of a fantasy sequence collectively called Tyrants and Kings, The Jackal of Nar starts off with a grueling account of what is still trench warfare even if its weaponry is magic flame cannons and trained wolves. The hero Richius is fighting a war he does not believe in for an emperor he loathes. Quite minor incidents come back to haunt him--he prevents a rape and makes a mortal enemy of a rival commander, and the almost casual decision to remain in a tavern in the company of prostitutes produces an obsession that dominates his life.
Marco's frequent clumsiness of style and plotting are almost irrelevant; Richius is a flawed hero whose sense of his own righteousness costs those around him even more than it does him, and there is a real power to his story. This is a book with some splendidly corrupt villains--the Emperor Arkus, obsessed with the pursuit of longevity and the manipulation of everyone around him; Biaggio, his smoothly vicious chief of police--and with opponents of whom we learn more when Richius is forced to change sides; Tharn, the fundamentalist wizard and warlord; and his aging servant Voris. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk [via]

John Marco presents the riveting continuation of the great fantasy saga begun in The Jackal of Nar and The Grand Design -- in which a young prince and a tyrant form a daring alliance with a band of rebels ... against a terrifying crisis that threatens to devastate a world.
Biagio, Emperor of Nar, was once a madman and a tyrant. Now he wants peace. The irony is that no one believes him. Instead, the cruelest of his minions -- Elrad Leth, Governor of Aramoor, and King Tassis Gayle of Talistan -- are amassing an army to usurp his throne, bringing a new scourge of death to a battle-scarred world. But the wily Biagio, still a brilliantly devious leader, has one more desperate plan.
At the heart of the scheme is Alazrian Leth, bastard son of Aramoor's governor. Barely sixteen, bookish and untrained, this young prince secretly possesses rare magical talents.
Biagio sends Alazrian on a near-impossible mission: to convince outlawed priest Jahl Rob and his followers -- the fearless Saints of the Sword -- to search for the exiled ruler of Aramoor and the mysterious people called the Triin. If these ancient enemies can unite into one great army, a boy's strange and wonderful magic may be the spark to heal a wounded world ... or set in motion an unimaginable betrayal.
