The year is 1849 and Europe shudders in the bitter aftermath of revolution. The mysterious Prince Stefan, revo- lutionary leader, lies chained in a castle dungeon. Princess Anna Teresa, daughter of the Grand Duke of Carthia, agrees to marry her cousin, Prince Franz, to ensure peace for her troubled country. When her parents are assassinated, she narrowly escapes with her life. She flees to the protection of her fiance's remote castle stronghold. Prince Franz, now Grand Duke of Carthia, refuses to acknowledge that the ragged waif seeking refuge is his fiancee. The Princess Anna Teresa, he declares, is dead and has already been buried in the cathedral. Stefan is dragged from his dungeon and Anna is forced to marry him. Within hours, she is fleeing from Prince Franz, travelling with Stefan across secret mountain passes into the Alps. Anna's life is in Stefan's hands. She knows he is a dangerous revolutionary, a believer in the theories of democracy she has been taught to fear. Her heart tells her that she can trust Stefan. But if she is wrong, she will lose her life and Carthia will lose its freedom.
