However, many questions about speciation remain controversial. The Birds of Northern Melanesia provides by far the most comprehensive study yet available of a rich fauna, composed of the 195 breeding land and fresh-water bird species of the Bismarck and Solomon Archipelagoes east of New Guinea. This avifauna offers decisive advantages for understanding speciation, and includes famous examples of geographic variation discussed in textbooks of evolutionary biology.
The book results from 30 years of collaboration between the evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr and the ecologist Jared Diamond. It shows how Northern Melanesian bird distributions provide snapshots of all stages in speciation, from the earliest (widely distributed species without geographic variation) to the last (closely related, reproductively isolated species occurring sympatrically and segregating ecologically). The presentation emphasizes the wide diversity of speciation outcomes, steering a middle course between one-model-fits-all simplification and ungeneralizable species accounts. Questions illuminated include why some species are much more prone to speciate than others, why some water barriers are much more effective at promoting speciation than others, and whether hypothesized taxon cycles, faunal dominance, and legacies of Pleistocene land bridges are real.
These years of study have resulted in a huge database, complete with distributions of all 195 species on 76 islands, together with their taxonomy, colonization routes, ecological attributes, abundance, and overwater dispersal. Color plates depict 88 species and allospecies, many of which have never been seen before. For students of speciation, Northern Melanesian birds now constitute a model system against which other biotas can be compared. Not every collapse has an environmental origin, but an eco-meltdown is often the main catalyst, he argues, particularly when combined with society's response to (or disregard for) the coming disaster. Still, right from the outset of Collapse, the author makes clear that this is not a mere environmentalist's diatribe. He begins by setting the book's main question in the small communities of present-day Montana as they face a decline in living standards and a depletion of natural resources. Once-vital mines now leak toxins into the soil, while prion diseases infect some deer and elk and older hydroelectric dams have become decrepit. On all these issues, and particularly with the hot-button topic of logging and wildfires, Diamond writes with equanimity.
Because he's addressing such significant issues within a vast span of time, Diamond can occasionally speak too briefly and assume too much, and at times his shorthand remarks may cause careful readers to raise an eyebrow. But in general, Diamond provides fine and well-reasoned historical examples, making the case that many times, economic and environmental concerns are one and the same. With Collapse, Diamond hopes to jog our collective memory to keep us from falling for false analogies or forgetting prior experiences, and thereby save us from potential devastations to come. Dabei nimmt er kein Blatt vor den Mund. So stellt er beispielsweise immer wieder scheinbares Allgemeinwissen als patriarchal geprägte Meinung bloß. Zum Beispiel dann, wenn er die Rolle der Jagd für die Menschheitsentwicklung als sehr viel kleiner befindet, als das üblicherweise geschieht. Oder dann, wenn er die meist als großer Fortschritt betrachtete Einführung der Landwirtschaft als extrem problematisch für die Menschheitsentwicklung enttarnt. Dieses Buch ist aufschlussreich, erstaunlich in seiner Fülle und der Leidenschaft seines Autors und nicht zuletzt sehr unterhaltsam zu lesen. Vieles, was man zu wissen glaubt, kommt hier auf den Prüfstand und wird nicht selten als Irrglaube entlarvt. Die bedrohliche Covergestaltung und der Titel sind hier ein wenig irreführend. Der Pulitzer-Preisträger Diamond -- er erhielt diese Auszeichnung für Arm und Reich -- untersucht, welche Bedingungen dazu führen, dass eine Gesellschaft untergeht. Prototyp dieses Untergangs ist für ihn die Gesellschaft der Oster-Insel. Daneben erzählt der Autor z.B. die Geschichte der Mayas oder der Wikinger, wendet sich aber auch heutigen Gesellschaften zu. U.a. stellt er das Beispiel Ruanda vor; das Land, in dem bekanntlich ein Völkermord von monströsen Ausmaßen stattfand.
Ganz Wissenschaftler benennt Diamond zunächst einmal fünf Faktoren, die beim Untergang einer Gesellschaft eine Rolle spielen können. Da wären zunächst Schäden, die der Umwelt unabsichtlich zugefügt werden. Als Zweites hebt Diamond Klimaveränderungen hervor. Weiterhin können feindliche Nachbarn ein Faktor der Zerstörung sein. Viertens: Die Hilfe freundlicher Nachbarn nimmt ab. Die fünfte und laut Diamond wichtigste Frage lautet jedoch: Wie reagiert eine Gesellschaft auf ihre Probleme? Keiner der fünf Faktoren dürfte für sich genommen zum Untergang führen, vielfach wirken sie in Kombination. Der fünfte Faktor aber, also wie man ökologischen und anderen Problemen begegnet, ist laut Diamond besonders bedeutsam.
Gesellschaften miteinander zu vergleichen, ist natürlich nicht unumstritten. Diamond nimmt diese Herausforderung an und legt eine kenntnisreiche Analyse vor, die man gleichermaßen unter kulturgeschichtlichen wie unter gesellschaftskritischen Aspekten lesen kann. Dem Ethos des Wissenschaftlers folgend, verzichtet der Autor dabei auf wilde Untergangsszenarien.
