"Diversity and Dialogue" honours distinguished artist James Luna (Luise-o) and five fellows: installation artist and sculptor Gerald Clarke (Cahuilla), photographer and videographer Dana Claxton (Lakota), painter and installation artist Sonya Kelliher-Combs (Inupiaq/Athabascan), artist Larry Tee Harbor Jackson McNeil (Tlingit/Nisgat), and photographer and installation artist Will Wilson (Dinz). An accompanying DVD presents James Luna's in-your-face performance works that question stereotypes about Native Americans. Vibrant essays consider how he and the other artists produce works that are both contemporary yet expressive of a traditional worldview.James H. Nottage is vice president and chief curatorial officer of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis. Other contributors include Margaret Archuleta (Tewa/Hispanic), Mique'l Icesis Askren (Tsimshian Nation Metlakatla, Alaska), Joanna Bigfeather (Western Cherokee/Mescalero Apache), Sandy Gillespie, Michelle La Flamme (African Canadian/Metis/Creek), Lee-Ann Martin (Mohawk), Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie (Seminole/Muscogee/Dinz), and Jennifer Vigil (Dinz/Latina). [via]

Forget bucking broncos - some of the wildest sights in the West can be found right inside a cowpoke's closet. From fringed chaps and embroidered jeans to silver-spurred boots and ten-gallon Stetsons, Western wear is a uniquely American look. Accompanying an exhibition at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, this book tells the story of Western wear and its place in American culture through photographs of costumed cowboys, Western movie stars and country and rock musicians, ephemera (such as vintage album covers, sheet music and sewing patterns), and Western clothing from buckskin vests to spangled chaps. "How the West was Worn" is an authoritative yet entertaining look at "glitterbillies" long riders, rodeo girls and rhinestone cowboys. [via]

Written by James H. Nottage, Vice President and Chief Curator at the Autry Museum, Saddlemaker to the Stars is the culmination of ten years of research and writing. Nottage examines Edward Bohlin's personal voyage from his departure from Sweden as a cabin boy aboard a freighter, to his apprenticeship as a cowboy in Montana, to the opening of his first saddleshop in Cody, Wyoming, to the growth of his shops in Hollywood. In the process, he situates Bohlin in his own time, and in the history of the American West. [via]
