J. R. Ward ist eine Bereicherung für das Genre Fantasy Romance, das im englischsprachigen Raum große Erfolge feiert und auch hierzulande von immer mehr Lesern entdeckt wird. Die Handlung ist in der Gegenwart angesiedelt, und Ward gelingt es überzeugend, die fantastischen Elemente ihrer Erzählung mit dem realistischen Hintergrund zu verknüpfen. Dabei kann sie der klassischen Figur des Vampirs auch noch einige neue Aspekte abgewinnen, ohne jedoch zuviel Raum auf komplizierte Erklärungen zu verwenden.
