    Book summary:

Upon hearing the first trio, Robert Schumann declared "Mendelssohn is the Mozart of the nineteenth century!" Written in the composer's famously flowing Romantic style, these two works are staples of the repertoire and anchors of many chamber music series. Both appear here for the first time in a single and affordable study edition.
A child prodigy, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-47) drew upon a variety of influences in his musical style chiefly Bach (for counterpoint), Mozart (for grace and clarity), and Beethoven (for dramatic power). Like the other German composers of the generation after Beethoven, Mendelssohn created works that mirror the era's dominant tension between Classicism and Romanticism. These trios are universally regarded as among the composer's finest works, with marked contrasts ranging from slow movements to lively scherzos in the manner of his "Songs Without Words."

    Book summary:

These 48 pieces were composed over a period of two decades, beginning in 1832, and published in eight groups of six each. Many of these songs were dedicated to the women in Mendelssohn's life and reflect the sunniest qualities of his melodiousness, spontaneity and invention. Maurice Hinson has skillfully researched and edited these works back to their original form and provides a very informative introduction, which includes many detailed suggestions for a stylistic interpretation and performance, as well as biographical information on the composer's life. The comb binding creates a lay-flat book that is perfect for study and performance.

    Book summary:

Mendelssohn's three greatest symphonies among the most performed and best-loved in the orchestral repertoire are presented here in one handsome, authoritative volume. This modestly priced compilation is essential for music students, conductors, and other music lovers.
Known as the "Scottish" Symphony, Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, Op. 56, was inspired by a trip to the highlands and dedicated to Queen Victoria. Its lively second movement is derived from Scottish folk music. Also inspired by the composer's travels, Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, is commonly known as the "Italian" Symphony and evokes the sunny peninsula's color and atmosphere. Symphony No. 5 in D Major, Op. 107, called the "Reformation" Symphony, was written in 1832 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Martin Luther's Augsburg Confession, the momentous document that formed the cornerstone of the Protestant Reformation. All three works appear here in definitive Breitkopf and Härtel editions.

    Book summary:

Composer Felix Mendelssohn's reputation fluctuates wildly according to the musical fashions of the moment. Some critics have found it convenient to overlook Mendelssohn's immense talents, falsely dismissing his music as sentimental, shallow, or overly Romantic. But these judgments, which have their origins in the endemic anti-Semitism of the mid-19th century, just don't hold up upon careful study of works like his Symphony No. 4, the "Italian." This is music that is thoughtfully conceived and deeply meaningful. Actually, Mendelssohn wrote 13 symphonies as a juvenile before tackling the form as an adult, but only the later works were counted when the numbers were being handed out. The "Italian" was written after a tour of Italy, and, like the "Scottish" Symphony, it is highly evocative of the country and culture it describes.

Mendelssohn's compositional technique is worth studying, and this pocket-sized score from Dover Publications is a useful tool. Sized to be totable for concerts, and with wide margins for scribbling notes, this little score still offers the entire orchestration. Like all Dover scores, it's a reprint of an out of copyright score from another publisher, so don't expect up-to-the-moment scholarship, but it's still a great deal. --Sarah Bryan Miller

    Book summary:

The task of finding sheet music and scores that are truly affordable is a perennial problem for music students, music lovers, and even professional performers. By reprinting other companies' music when the copyright runs out, Dover Publications has been a leader in this area for decades. Best known for its full-size scores, Dover offers a new line that should cheer the impoverished student and anyone else who appreciates a bargain. The company has now moved into the miniature-scores market. Mini scores are ideal study guides, sized right to fit into a pocket or handbag, and easy to pull out and follow along with at concerts. The new line from Dover (featuring a nice wide-bottom margin for note taking) carries a much lower retail price than the competition's.

The Dover score of Mahler's "Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp Minor" is a reprint of one originally published in 1904 by C.F. Peters of Leipzig. They've spruced it up with the addition of a helpful four-page glossary of German musical terms with their English equivalents. Unlike the three symphonies that immediately preceded it, "Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp Minor" is not programmatic in nature, nor does it make use of singers. Mahler composed it during his engagement and early years of marriage to Alma Schindler. The symphony's structure builds to the resounding climax of the final movement, pausing at the fourth movement for a meditation on his love for Alma. This is a magnificently complex score, and one that rewards repeat listeners. --Sarah Bryan Miller
