In the fine arts, as in science and technology, developments since the end of World War II have taken place with bewildering speed and complexity. The eminent art historian Dore Ashton examines with admirable clarity and a broad outlook the years since 1945, which have been by far the most important in the whole history of art in the United States. Immediately upon the end of the war, influences which had been at work during the war years resulted in an astounding surge of artistic activity, some of it affected by the work of European artists who had taken temporary or permanent refute in the US during eh war, and some developing out of deeper native sources. This quickly gave New York the preeminent position in art that had belonged before the war to Paris. The route from Abstract Expressionism--one of the most revolutionary movements in modern art--to other forms of abstraction, to minimal art, to conceptualist art, Pop art, to art which seems to defy art, and even back to a more traditional realistic and representational art, is traced by Ashton. She indicates each of the transitions, the motivations, the reactions, and sets them within the general cultural background of contemporary society. This is a masterly discussion of art in context, in which due attention is given not only to the recognized masters, such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, but also to many lesser and yet significant creators who have helped to make the United States the most vital and productive center for art of all kinds. The most comprehensive survey of Philip Guston's work to date, this catalogue showcases 138 paintings and drawings, spanning from 1930 to the artist's death in 1980. A team of scholars addresses key issues and themes surrounding the development of Guston's art, exploring his early influences and the origins of symbols that resurfaced and played a prominent role in his late work. They provide insight into Guston's philosophy regarding abstraction, his role within its development, and the social and art historical context from which his so-called 'Klan paintings' emerged. The volume includes an essay written by Guston, an illustrated chronology of the artist's life and career, and a comprehensive bibliography. [via]
