John Sell Cotmans Yorkshire subjects are widely considered to be among the finest watercolors ever painted. In this gorgeously illustrated book David Hill presents the first detailed account of Cotmans tours of the north of England.
Cotman was twenty-one on his first visit in 1803. The Cholmeley family of Brandsby Hall near York promptly engaged him as drawing master, and he was introduced to a wide circle of Yorkshire patrons. He returned in 1804 and 1805, and in a series of works including the famous Greta Bridge, he achieved a state of perfection in the art of watercolor that has rarely if ever been surpassed. Every major painting, related studies, and the authors own photographs of the locations in which Cotman worked are included in this beautiful book.

This book presents the basic ideas of linear algebra in a manner that users will find understandable. It offers a fine balance between abstraction/theory and computational skills, and gives readers an excellent opportunity to learn how to handle abstract concepts. Included in this comprehensive and easy-to-follow manual are these topics: linear equations and matrices; solving linear systems; real vector spaces; inner product spaces; linear transformations and matrices; determinants; eigenvalues and eigenvectors; differential equations; and MATLAB for linear algebra. Because this book gives real applications for linear algebraic basic ideas and computational techniques, it is useful as a reference work for mathematicians and those in field of computer science.

This work has two primary parts. One consists of the 13 LABS and three Projects in this manual. The other is a set of instructional M-files that harness the power of the software package MATLAB tm to render it appropriate for an educational setting. The LABS and Projects are meant to supplement a standard sophomore level course in linear algebra. They follow the general outline for such a course, introducing instructional routines and appropriate MATLAB commands to solve problems related to each concept. Our primary goal is to use the laboratory experiences to aid in understanding the basic ideas of linear algebra. As such we use instructional M-files that provide a tool kit for working with linear algebra without the need for programming in the MATLAB command set. Although no programming background is assumed, those students with computing skills can further enhance their skills within MATLAB. We have found that students initially rely on the tool kit, but many quickly begin to use MATLAB commands directly, even though we provide little formal instruction in this area. We recommend an instructional approach that integrates the language and terminology of computing within the lecture format. In addition, when possible and appropriate, computer demonstrations and experiments should be used in lectures. Three of the LABS are different from the others. LAB 5 examines sets with addition and scalar multiplication and investigates the defining properties of a vector space in a pedagogical way. LAB 8 presents the defining properties of the determinant in such a way that a considerable amount of class time can be saved on this topic. Also, LAB 11 presents an independent supplement to the standard classroom coverage of linear transformations by examining the geometry of plane linear transformations. New Section 11.2 introduces homogeneous coordinates to incorporate translations. The LABS are not self contained. Except for LABS 8 and 11, they assume that the material has already been presented in the classroom. Sometimes, however, it is expedient to discuss a topic using a fresh, computational approach. New material has been added to this third addition, both in the LABS and in the accompanying instructional M-files. The modifications to the LABS provide a number of alternate approaches to topics some of which use more graphically oriented M-files to provide visualization of concepts. Many of the instructional M-files have been enhanced to take advantage of the graphical user interface GUI available in MATLAB . In addition we have included instructional files that use the Symbolic Math Toolbox. These sections can be omitted without loss of continuity if this toolbox is not available. A detailed list of new features is on page viii and a short description of all the instructional files is on page x. A full description of the instructional files is available by printing alldesc.txt that accompanies the tool kit of instructional files. We extend our sincere gratitude to the National Science Foundation ILI #DMS-9051282 for providing the funds for implementing a mathematics laboratory at Temple University. This facility provided the educational arena necessary to develop the laboratory materials and extend our instructional M-files for MATLAB from 1990 to 1993. We thank the many students who were patient with and receptive to using the laboratory to aid in the development and understanding of the concepts of linear algebra. A special thanks to our colleague Dr. Nicholas Macri for his valuable assistance in designing and preparing this manual. David R. Hill David E. Zitarelh May, 2003

Rose of Sharon had cried out to the man on the boat, tried to warn him the night he was shot for fishing where he wasn't welcome. Then she retreated into silence--and guilt. Rose might have kept quiet if it hadn't been for Lily, the outsider whose infidelities titillated Prince George County. Brassy, blonde Lily saw straight through Rose, the dutiful wife of an abusive man. Lily pushed her over the edge, exacting friendship where Rose had none to give, demanding that she break the code of silence that imprisoned them all. For both women knew that a man was killed in Prince George County for the color of his skin--and the time for change had come.

Two hundred years ago, J.M.W. Turner packed up two large leatherbound sketchbooks, pencils, and watercolours and left London for the north of England. When he returned from the tour that he regarded as one of the most important of his career, Turner had completed over two hundred sketches - works that later became the basis of more than fifty major paintings and watercolours. David Hill reconstructs in detail Turner's tour of 1797, which included sites in Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Durham, Northumberland, the Scottish borders, the Lake District, northern Lancashire, and Lincolnshire. Hill contends that this trip to the more remote country of Britain provided Turner with memories of dales, wild coasts, and mountains that shaped the whole of his future directions as a landscape painter. For this beautifully illustrated book, David Hill has taken photographs of many of the sites Turner sketched on his northern tour. These photographs appear alongside reproductions of Turner's first sketches (many here published for the first time) and the finished works derived from them. The result is an intriguing look at the whole of Turner's creative process, from site to exhibited picture, and at the quality and intensity of the artist's experience. Turner in the North celebrates the bicentenary of Turner's north country tour and accompanies a major exhibition to be held at the Tate Gallery in London before travelling to Harewood House in Yorkshire.

J.M.W. Turner had a lifelong association with the River Thames. He was born near the river and throughout his life he maintained a home on or within wasy reach of its banks. Thames scenery was a favourite source of inspiration for paintings, watercolours and sketches. In 1805, Turner moved into Syon Ferry House, overlooking the Thames at Isleworth. He spent the succeeding months sailing and fishing, reading and dreaming, filling his sketchbooks with vivid records of his observations and imaginings and painting oil sketches that rank among the most immediate and vital works he produced. In this book, David Hill retraces Turner's journeys along the Thames during 1805: his explorations of the river in his immediate neighbourhood; his sailing trips upstream to Oxford or trips down the River Wey to Guildford and Godalming, and his adventures downstream through the port of London and out to the open waters of the Estuary and the Nore. Hill charts the growth of Turner's association with the river, the way in which he transformed his sketches from this period into paintings and influence of his Thames experience on the rest of his career. Combining art historical research with topographical and social history, Hill provides a chronology of Turner's sketches in different media and identifies and describes the scenery and buildings they depicted.
