Anne McCaffrey and Margaret Ball, two great names in the genre, join forces to create the first in a stunning and magical series about Acorna, The Unicorn Princess.
Science fiction and fantasy's most beloved female author turns her unparalleled talents to a brilliant new series written in collaboration with rising star Margaret Ball. The future of an entire species rests on the delicate shoulders of a tiny baby who was set adrift in a lifepod to save her from the vicious hands of Khlevii warriors. Her rescuers, three bachelor asteroid miners, marvel at the unusual child's astonishing growth rate and superior intelligence, naming her Acorna for her other-worldly silvery mane of hair and horn-like bump in the middle of her forehead.
Enchanting though she is, young Acorna's unusual talents capture the attention of some unsavory intergalactic inhabitants who are determined to twist her powers for their own gain. But as Acorna gains control over her powers she matures into a worthy contender in the interspatial adventures that pursue her in her desperate search for her "People" and their world. [via]

It's been suspected that these enemy aliens have been planning a major assault throughout the region, and now it appears those rumors are true. Facing annihilation of her entire race, Acorna must discover the Khleevi's weakness -- and strike first! [via]

This SF team's earlier novel, Acorna, introduced the alien girl Acorna, an orphan rescued and reared by space-faring humans. Though generally human-shaped, she shares some features with the unicorn of myth--notably, a forehead horn that can heal and purify. Now Acorna blasts off with human friends in search of her own race, who shortly turn up looking for her. These gentle, horned nonhumans are fleeing other aliens who are wanton murderers and torturers that resemble huge cockroaches. Meanwhile, a starship full of dispossessed human miners picks up a scientist whose devastating system of planetary weather control inspires some on-board criminals to stage a coup and use the weather machine to blackmail whole planets; Acorna stumbles into this conflict. Meanwhile, a spacefleet of killer roaches is on its way.
These storylines mix romance, light comedy, and some violent action, which is generally downplayed or dealt with offstage. Of course, the verminous villains find humanity a tougher proposition than nice unicorn-folk and complain bitterly: "They are barbaric and vicious beyond belief; when attacked, they actually fight back!" Happy endings emerge, with room for more sequels. Overall, Acorna's Quest feels like a romping, uncomplicated SF adventure intended for younger readers and Anne McCaffrey devotees. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk [via]

Acorna the "unicorn girl" -- found as a baby years ago, abandoned and floating alone in an escape pod at the far end of the galaxy -- has made peace with her past, her "Linyaari" heritage, and with the powerful "differences" that set her apart from the loving humans who raised her. But only in the deep reaches of limitless space can she truly feel at home.
Now, aboard the interplanetary salvage vessel "Condor," Acorna is free once more, traveling through space in the company of her good friend, ship's commander Captain Jonas Becker, his gargantuan feline "first mate" Roadkill, and Aari, a proud "Linyaari" survivor of torture at the hands of the savage, bug-like "Khleevi." But the journey is interrupted when a transmitted distress call -- faint but undeniable -- draws Acorna and her companions down to the surface of a nearby planet.
What awaits them is a world of wonders, shrouded in an atmosphere of strange, intoxicating perfumes. Intelligent, sentiment plants help guide Acorna, Becker, Aari, and RK to the source of the SOS. But a broken, burned out -- alien ship is all they find, the pitiful remnants of a relentlessly brutal yet carefully coordinated assault. To Acorna, the signs are unmistakable.
This is the grim handiwork of the cold-blooded species that seeks the complete eradication of all human and "Linyaari" life from the galaxy...the "Khleevi"!
And suddenly all that Acrona holds dear is in grave peril. Because the devastation that was wrought here was no isolated occurence, but the opening move in a planned onslaught that will decimate the two races to whom Acorna is culturally, emotionally, and genetically tied. A worlds-shattering catastrophe is inthe making -- unless one courageous and beautiful young woman with remarkable healing powers and her small, motley group of friends can go the unthinkable: discover the fearsome insectile enemy's greatest weakness...and strike first.
