By taking a step back in time and examining the amazing scientific developments that have taken place in the past, Future offers an interesting perspective on how the human race may be living day-to-day in the next century and beyond. Major breakthroughs, such as the mass production of the Model T Ford and manned space flight, are compared with contemporary scientific developments, which Tambini then extrapolates to their logical conclusion, building a convincing picture of potential future technologies and how they will affect society.
Some of the ideas may seem fanciful--will machines really be able to "think", could a microchip be used to cure blindness, is it viable to mine natural resources on the moon?--but Tambini's ideas are very much based on current thinking and research in progress, much of which is expected to come to fruition sooner rather than later. Future is an attractive, well- conceived book that anyone with an interest in science and technology will find thought- provoking. --Susan Harrison [via]
