This is a true story. . . It is a terrible story; but it is also a story of hope and of beauty. Written by Aleister Crowley, Diary of a Drug Fiend tells the story of young Peter Pendragon and his lover Louise Laleham, and their adventures traveling through Europe in a cocaine and heroin haze. The bohemian couples' binges produce visions and poetic prophecies, but when their supply inevitably runs dry they find themselves faced with the reality of their drug addiction. Through the guidance of King Lamus, a master adept, they use the application of practical Magick to free themselves from addiction. First published in 1922 and dubbed "a book for burning" by the papers of the time, Diary of a Drug Fiend reveals the poet, the lover, and the profound adept that was Aleister Crowley. [via]

TO SYNTHESIZE THE AIMS OF RELIGION AND THE METHODS OF SCIENCE This was the mission of the original Equinox-a massive work printed during the early twentieth century in ten large volumes and several subsequent books. It has long been out of print, and even when republished it is beyond the economic reach of most students. This 1 volume condensation contains all the important magickal writings from the original, edited and arranged by Israel Regardie so that the student can "find his way through the maze more easily." Crowley said of the Equinox: "My special job was to preserve the Sacred Tradition, so that a new Renaissance might in due season rekindle the hidden light..." That Renaissance is now. Here we have a "masterpiece of instruction"-systematizing in masterful prose the subject matter of the occult, stripping it of the "superstition, dross and fantasy" encrusted on it over the ages. One section deals with the history, grades and official program of the Magickal Order, the A.". A."., founded by Crowley; another with the Law for this New Aeon. A 3rd is one of the most lucid texts on yoga available. A 4th delineates magickal rituals, which, like yoga, serve to unite the mind to a single idea: an essential to the Great Work. Here are included basic rituals, methods of consecration, of invocation of elements and elementals, the Mass of the Phoenix and the Gnostic Mass, and the sublime "Vision and the Voice." Also included is a section on sex magick Gems from the Equinox focuses on the techniques for the achievement of ecstasy, the attainment of Godhead. Aleister Crowley is the major philosopher of the occult during the first half of the 20th century, and one of the world's great mystics. Israel Regardie, a former secretary of Crowley's, has written a biography of him (Eye in the Triangle, Llewellyn, 1971) and is in addition a respected student of the occult-a man, in short, perfectly suited to distill the essence of the Equinox. Magick Without Tears is filled with gems of wisdom and philosophy, arranged very topically and with a useful index. Crowley uses plain language in the letters although the book does require concentration and more than one reading to absorb much of the content; this is not fluff reading for the beach! His writing style is informal, charming and humorous in some areas and vitriolic in others, especially when confronting lazy or muddled thinking in his students. Pomposity is kept to a minimum and the conversational tone makes The Great Beast seem almost approachable.
Crowley covers a host of topics, from vampires to overcoming one's fears of astral travel to geomancy, womanhood, false "teachers" and other subjects.
It's assumed that readers will have more than a passing familiarity with the points he discusses and occultism in general, and part of the book's appeal is that it answers questions that serious students will already have arrived at on their own. Crowley's insights are certainly illuminating since they spring from a lifetime of experience. To his credit, he advocates critical thinking and skepticism in his students and leaves some blanks for readers to fill in; practical information is freely given to a point, after which it's up to you! Much can be inferred from his silence on certain points also, which is why this book needs careful reading if you want to get the most out of it. Don't let the conversational tone fool you; this book is a serious work with plenty of information there for the taking. [via]

Aleister Crowley was - in his own eyes at least - the greatest poet of his day, and even in the eyes of less partial critics, such as his friend W.B. Yeats, a poet of merit. "White Stains", his first collection of poetry, was first published in 1898 by Leonard Smithers, who also published Beardsley, Beerbohm, Dyson, Symons and Wilde. Of the 100 copies that appeared in the first edition, 83 were pulped by Her Majesty's Customs in 1924. It is here published in paperback, with an introduction by John Symonds, Crowley's literary executor and biographer. [via]
